About Jon

I was born and raised in Hurst, attending Shady Oaks Elementary, Bedford Junior High, and L.D. Bell High School.  I received a degree in Mass Communications from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.  After college I thru-hiked the 2,168 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.  After my time in the woods I lived in New Hampshire for a few years and worked as an RF Engineer with a wireless consulting firm.

I returned to Hurst, Texas to marry my childhood sweetheart Brianne – we have known each other since we were 6 years old.  We have been married for 18 years.  We have two daughters who attend HEBISD schools.

I have worked as a minister with the Bridgewood Church of Christ since 2003.  I truly enjoy my work as a minister and appreciate the flexibility the church has afforded me to work with the City Council in Hurst.  Our church places a high value on community involvement.  I arrange my schedule so I can attend many of the events and luncheons that take place during business hours.  I also enjoy running a small side business selling school surplus items on eBay and at an antique mall in Hurst.

While working and raising a family I earned a Master of Strategic Leadership degree from the University of Dallas.  Knowledge from this time of study has helped immensely with my work on the City Council and in my professional career.

Current volunteer roles in the community:

  • PTA President Shady Oaks Elementary
  • Volunteer with NEED food pantry

My Dad, Jimmy McKenzie, served as a member of the Hurst City Council for 20 years.  As a child, I remember attending many city events with him.  It was during that time that the seeds of community involvement and service were planted in my heart.  I have truly enjoyed giving back to my community as a member of the Hurst City Council and hope that some day my girls will become active and involved citizens in the community where they live.

We built our home next door to my parents 15 years ago and my brother and his family did the same thing, on the other side of my parents, 4 years ago.  I am raising my family on the street where I grew up surrounded by many of the same great neighbors who have known me since I was a boy.  Hurst truly is a special place that has a small town feel in the big city.  As a member of your City Council, I strive to make decisions that continue to make Hurst a great place to live and raise a family.
